World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day takes place every year on March 21st. This date (3/21) represents the 3 copies of chromosome 21 which is unique to people with Down syndrome. The purpose of the holiday is to promote acceptance and to celebrate the achievements, talents, and abilities of people with Down syndrome.

Here are three great children's novels that feature characters who happen to have Down syndrome:

Galante, Cecilia. Willowood. New York: Aladdin, 2010.

Christopher, Matt, and Karen Lidbeck. Fighting Tackle. Boston: Little, Brown, 1995.

Hobbs, Valerie. The Last Best Days of Summer. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2010.
